Mexican-American Comfort Comida

While growing up in Italy, Noren reveled in her enjoyment of the antipasto bars, where the marrying of fresh, seasonal and simple ingredients created gourmet dining experiences. She loved the Italian way of eating and the depth in which people savored their meals in taking the time to relax, communicate and digest. Little did she know, these delectable adventures would be inspiration for future endeavors and in the creation of a space that is now La Frontera, a place where people can do the same without feeling the need to rush their dining experience. A proven mainstay of San Miguel de Allende’s culinary backdrop, which boasts a plethora of dining options, many have come and gone during Noren’s tenure.

With the 2004 opening of El Burrito Bistro, formerly located on Correo Street just above Centro’s jardin, Noren filled a void by bringing the California style burrito to San Miguel and soon it was a very popular spot. However, staying in that location was no longer economically feasible with San Miguel’s international prominence leading to its commercial explsion. Through trial and error, she reinvented her vision several times and decided to look to her heritage. Being a Mexican-American of Jewish descent, she focused on Mexican-American comfort food and with that, La Frontera opened its doors Thanksgiving Day 2012. Having endured many challenges, even hardships in order to remain a staple of providing wholesome food for locals, expats and the many visitors San Miguel, Noren is one of the hardest working restauranteurs in the business.

La Frontera Staff

La Frontera is quite fortunate to have a staff of very hard working, honest and friendly members. Our waitstaff have built rapports with long-time customers making them feel cared for as an extension of the La Frontera family. Every team member is willing to help do what’s necessary for the up keep and maintenance of our spacious grounds. We host all types of celebrations and events that at times are foreign to Mexican society and our staff are always respectful while engaging with the diversity of our clientele. My head chef, Jiovani, has been with La Frontera the longest and has studied gastronomy. He uses this education to assist in producing recipes for our Indian and Middle Eastern specials that we serve on occasion. Noren takes the back of the house team members out of their culinary comfort zone and they step up to the challenge. There is a harmonious flow in the manner in which the crew works together, particularly proven during 2020’s pandemic where each one helped to thrive throughout those trying times. There is a strong family tie and a sense of team spirit between us all.

Why comfort food?

Like receiving a big hug when you need it most, Noren believes that food should be simple, straightforward and bountiful. She sees the fruits of this planet as plentiful gifts, with no need to reduce them to foams nor cook or arrange it with tweezers. In creating La Frontera’s comfort food we use the freshest, high-quality and natural ingredients making it a home-away-from-home experience. A place where you can enjoy home-cooked favorites while fulfilling most dietary restrictions. With the exception of our fried food, we cook with olive oil and pure butter. Noren personally hand picks the vegetables daily for the variety of vegetable dishes on the menu, from the crisp green salads, to the homemade salsas and traditional sides like hand-cut green beans and creamed spinach. Our chicken is delivered fresh daily from San Miguel's organic chicken farm and our beef comes from a local boutique butcher who supplies it from his ranch as much as possible. And, although San Miguel de Allende is inland we are provided with beautiful seafood for our selection of grilled specialties.

Community

La Frontera has become more than just a restaurant. It’s a gathering place where many come to play games, conduct meetings, hold seminars, enjoy festivities, observe memorial & religious ceremonies. We like celebrating traditional expat holidays like Thanksgiving and 4th of July. Every other Monday we have the honor to host Charity Bingo. Although we’re considered a small business in need of monetary support to keep the boat afloat, there is always room for generosity. San Miguel's growth and popularity has made it quite an upscale city in its offerings. Casual, everyday, high-quality eateries are needed and we would like to think that La Frontera provides that choice as we strive to maintain a menu providing economical options during a time of steep inflation. During 2020’s pandemic we began packaging hearty soups and TV dinners for people to keep in their freezers for emergencies.
